A voyage to Antarctica entails crossing the legendary 1000km-wide Drake Passage, named for English explorer Sir Francis Drake, with wildlife-spotting opportunities including Wilson’s petrels, soaring albatrosses and occasional whale and dolphin appearances. Overnight in Buenos Aires–the “Paris of South America”–before flying to the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia, where your Antarctica adventure begins.
Navigate through the adventurous Drake Passage, and spend five full days immersed in the majesty of “The Great White Continent.” You’ll have opportunities to kayak amongst massive icebergs, trek to penguin colonies, and watch for whales while exploring by Zodiac. Your adventure takes in many marvels including the mysterious Aitcho Islands, home to chinstrap and gentoo penguins that can be seen porpoising offshore, the Antarctic Sound with its ‘Iceberg Alley’ of vast tabular icebergs, and the Polish Antarctic research station Arktowski.
There’s also Brown Bluff with it rust-colored, iron-rich rocks that form its cliffs above the beach – part of an extinct and rare tuya volcano that volcano that erupted beneath the glacier a million years ago. Due to its large penguin population, Brown Bluff can be a great place to view hunting leopard seals. Another geological wonder of Antarctica is Deception Island with is black sand beaches in Whalers Bay and its regular signs of thermal activity, including clouds of steam rising along the shoreline. Past these and many other natural wonders, you’ll arrive at Ushuaia, with spectacular trekking in nearby Tierra del Fuego National Park and colorful stories and historical heritage at The End of the World Museum. You’ll also be able to tour the Ukrainian research station of Vernadsky in the Argentine Islands, plus its traditional-style English pub–the southernmost in the world!
