Day 1

Depart gateway city

Depart your gateway city for Paris, France.

Day 2

Paris, France/Honfleur

Arrive at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. Proceed through immigration to the baggage claim area and retrieve your luggage. After completing customs, AHI FlexAir passengers traveling on flights that qualify for the group arrival transfer and Land Program passengers who have purchased seats on the group transfer should exit the baggage claim area and proceed to the designated meeting spot, where an AHI Travel representative will meet them.

Transfer to Honfleur and the Mercure Honfleur Hotel.

Gather with your fellow travelers for a Welcome Reception and Dinner.

Day 3

Honfleur

Excursion: Historic Honfleur
Get to know your home base of Honfleur as you stroll the narrow streets in its classic French town center, nestled against a striking 17th-century harbor. Soak up the scene that has inspired artists, writers and musicians for centuries as you visit the Old Port, the wooden Church of Sainte-Cathérine and other historic landmarks.

Educational Focus: D-Day and the Battle of Normandy
Discover the important role that the beaches of Normandy played in D-Day, one of the most pivotal moments in World War II.

Day 4

Le Mont-Saint-Michel

Excursion: Le Mont-Saint-Michel
For centuries, pilgrims have made their way to the spectacular church on Le Mont-Saint-Michel, a tidal island off the Normandy coast. Today, make your own pilgrimage to this UNESCO World Heritage site. Le Mont-Saint-Michel’s dramatic turrets tower over the flat white sands surrounding this tiny granite island. Explore the island that has served as a fortress, monastery and prison. Visit the Abbey Church, which dates from the eighth century.

Independent Exploration
Enjoy a day at leisure to explore Honfleur and your own interests.

Elective Excursion and Educational Focus: Giverny and Rouen
Delve into Monet’s life and work at his home in Giverny. The garden that inspired many of his paintings has been restored. Admire its tranquil beauty before visiting the studio where he painted his “Water Lilies” series. The studio now is a museum. Continue to the Musée des Impressionnismes Giverny, dedicated to the history of impressionism and how a Monet and the impressionism movement influenced a colony of American artists in the town. Enjoy a lecture about Normandy and how it became the “cradle” of impressionism. Lunch is included at the museum café. Depart Giverny for Rouen, the Norman capital. See the Gros Horloge and the cathedral painted by Monet, and hear the haunting story of Joan of Arc.

Day 6

D-Day beaches

Excursion: D-Day and the Battle of Normandy
The Normandy coast provided the theater for Operation Overlord, one of history’s most complex and important invasions. Your journey to the sites pivotal to the ultimate success of the Allied effort begins with a lecture on the monumental events of June 6, 1944. See Arromanches, site of one of the offshore mulberry harbors; Omaha Beach, where U.S. forces braved poor weather conditions and heavily fortified waters and beaches to overcome German troops; and Pointe du Hoc, where U.S. Rangers scaled 100-foot cliffs to destroy German artillery emplacements. At St-Laurent-sur-Mer, visit the beautiful and solemn Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial.

Day 7

Bayeux/Caen

Excursion: Bayeux
Journey to Bayeux and view the 200-foot-long Bayeux Tapestry, which depicts the events surrounding William the Conqueror and the Battle of Hastings. See Nôtre Dame Cathedral, a masterpiece of Norman Gothic architecture.

Excursion: Caen
Visit the Peace Memorial in Caen, an award-winning museum dedicated to peace. During your visit, learn about 20th-century history including World War II, D-Day Landings and the Cold War through an array of exhibits, photos and video footage.

Local Flavor
Calvados, apple brandy, is one of the most famous items from Normandy. On the way back to Honfleur, visit a distillery that produces Calvados. Nestled by 42 acres of apple orchards, this distillery also makes the cider from which the brandy is distilled. Sample some Calvados, and taste why many consider it to be among the world’s finest brandies.

Educational Focus: The French Resistance
Discuss the French Resistance in Normandy during World War II.

Independent Exploration
Spend a final day at leisure in Honfleur. You may want to visit one the local gardens, walk along the sea walls, or visit one of the several art and history museums. Rent a bicycle to explore your own must-see list of the city’s attractions, visit Maisons Satie, where sounds and images transport you to the whimsical world of French composer Erik Satie, or simply relax in this history-rich locale. Your Travel Director can offer suggestions and help you make arrangements.

Tonight, gather for a Farewell Reception, followed by a graduation ceremony and a farewell dinner.

Depart for gateway city
