Personalize Your Cruise | Choose one of the following excursions.

Cologne’s Magnificent Cathedral
Germany’s oldest major city, Cologne takes pride in its vibrant cultural scene and its awe-inspiring Gothic cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Topped by two ornately decorated spires, the church was under construction for more than 630 years. Contemplate this splendid structure during a guided walking tour of the old town.

Jewish Heritage Walk
Cologne’s Jewish history dates to its founding by the Romans, and by the 11th century, the city had a sizable Jewish community. Learn more about an active archeological project that is uncovering and preserving the remains of the historic Jewish quarter. Then visit the Cologne City Museum, housed in the former armory building, to see a wide-ranging collection of exhibits on the city’s political, religious, economic and social past.

Following your excursion, enjoy free time in the afternoon. Linger at the brightly adorned holiday market stalls situated just outside the cathedral, or pay a visit to the Wallraf-Richartz Museum of Art or the Cologne Chocolate Museum.

Day 4
Koblenz/Rhine Gorge

Excursion: Koblenz
More than 2,000 years ago, the Romans established a settlement at the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine rivers. Today, the beautiful town of Koblenz occupies that same location. During a walking tour, see the fountain in front of the town hall; the Church of Our Lady with a Gothic choir and baroque towers; the Old Castle, once home to Trier’s Electors, and now the site of the city archives; and the Old Merchant’s Hall, which today is the Middle Rhineland Museum.

Return to the ship for lunch and set sail.

The Rhine boasts more castles along its banks than any other river in the world. This afternoon, sail through the beautiful Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage site, en route to Miltenberg. Pass Loreley Rock, named after the legendary siren whose song bewitched many sailors and caused ships to crash into the rocks.

After your tour, delight in Miltenberg’s holiday market in the town square and browse through the arts, crafts and decorations on display. Day 6

Würzburg/Rothenburg

Excursion: Würzburg
This morning, visit the stately Würzburg Residence, one of Europe’s finest palaces and a UNESCO World Heritage site. From 1720 to 1780, under the patronage of two prince-bishops, a team of prominent architects, painters and builders constructed the enormous baroque building, decorated its lavish interior and laid out its beautifully landscaped formal gardens. Continue to Würzburg’s historic city center for a guided walking tour. Stroll to the impressive St. Kilian’s Cathedral, built in 1040 in the Romanesque style; the Neumünslerkirche, the site of St. Kilian’s crypt; the Old Town Hall; and the town’s lively market.

Excursion: Rothenburg and The Romantic Road
The Romantic Road connects scenic towns set among the forests and mountains of southern Germany. Along this road, drive from Würzburg to Rothenburg, one of its prettiest destinations, and be transported to the Middle Ages as you explore this superbly preserved fortified city. Its full German name, “Rothenburg ob de Tauber,” or “red fortress above the Tauber,” alludes to its strategic defensive position on a plateau over the nearby river. During your walking tour of the Old Town, see the towers, turrets, covered ramparts and numerous gateways along the city walls that provided protection for medieval residents. Rothenburg is also a special destination for those who love the holiday season; it’s home to the German Christmas Museum and known for the scrumptious treat, schneeball – or snow ball – a fried pastry dusted with powdered sugar.

Relax onboard as the ship continues its journey to Bamberg this morning.

Bamberg
As an outstanding example of a European medieval town, Bamberg has been named a UNESCO World Heritage site. Take a guided walking tour through town to see its Gothic and Baroque architectural gems. Pass through the grand archway of the Old Town Hall, situated in the middle of a bridge over the Regnitz River. Legend has it that when the bishop of Bamberg denied the townspeople’s request for land to erect a town hall, they drove stakes into the river to create an artificial island on which to build it.

Culinary Delights
Make your way through Bamberg to taste the mouthwatering specialties of the Franconian region and learn how they are prepared. During stops at a bakery, butcher shop, deli and candy store, sample popular local treats such as the Bamberger Hörnla, a buttery crescent-shaped pastry; the Bamberger Weck, a sausage and roll combination; the region’s dark, aromatic smoked beer; and the town’s famous licorice.

Make your way down to the center of town into the Hauptmarkt square to see the Schöner Brunnen, or Beautiful Fountain, a 14th-century Gothic work of art in the style of a church spire. Admire the façade of the Frauenkirche, or Our Lady’s Church, known for its mechanical clock with moving figures, and see St. Lorenz Church, constructed in the 15th century.
