Zagreb, Croatia

Arrive at Zagreb Pleso Airport. After completing customs, AHI FlexAir passengers traveling on flights that qualify for the group arrival transfer to hotel and Land Program passengers who have purchased seats on the group transfer should exit the baggage claim area and proceed to the designated meeting spot, where an AHI Travel representative will meet them. Transfer and check in to the Esplanade Zagreb Hotel. Tonight, get to know your fellow travelers during a Welcome Reception and Dinner at the hotel.

Gain a thorough understanding of recent events that have shaped the stable, independent Croatia of today.

Excursion: Exploring Zagreb
Tucked between the sparkling Sava River and the forested slopes of Mount Medvednica, the city of Zagreb awaits to be discovered. Stroll the narrow, winding streets and admire the city’s rich array of Austro-Hungarian architecture. At the heart of Zagreb’s beautifully preserved Upper Town, visit iconic St. Mark’s Church. Originally erected in the 13th century, its brilliantly tiled mosaic roof depicts the Croatian, Dalmatian and Slavic coats of arms as well as those representing Zagreb.

Independent Exploration
Take part in today’s Optional Excursion to the countryside of Croatia or enjoy a full day at leisure in this vibrant capital city. Treat yourself to an idyllic morning browsing the Museum of Contemporary Art or enjoying the quirky Museum of Broken Relationships. Spend a few hours people watching in Zagreb’s Jelačić Square or wander through the farmer’s market and sample some local fruits and honeys.

Elective: Croatia’s Countryside*
Enjoy a panoramic drive from Zagreb to Hrvatsko Zagorje, Croatia’s scenic north country. Visit Klanjec, its Antun Augustincic Museum and Gallery and the Church of St. Mary. Continue to Kumrovec, a quaint village nestled near the Sulta River and Slovenian border. Perhaps most well known as being the birthplace of Tito, the village also boasts an open-air museum in its Old Village. This popular Kumrovec Museum features well-preserved houses from the end of the 19th century and a reconstructed, picturesque rural setting. Enjoy regional specialties during lunch at Gresna Gorica Restaurant, a family-run eatery that offers stunning views of northern Croatia’s countryside.

Day 5

Plitvice Lakes National Park/Split

After breakfast, depart Zagreb.

Excursion: Plitvice Lakes National Park
Enjoy a refreshing escape to one of Croatia’s most spectacular natural wonders. This UNESCO World Heritage Centre flaunts sixteen crystal lakes that are laced together in a series of awe-inspiring waterfalls and cascades. The vibrant landscape is a vision of unsurpassed beauty where the waters shimmer and constantly change color, a result of the karst terrain. Wander planked walkways and trails amid a fragrant forest of beech and pine. The park is also home to nearly 160 species of birds as well as many rare, endemic species, including the endangered European brown bear. Enjoy lunch on the outing. 

Continue on a scenic drive to Split, and, upon arrival, check in to the Cornaro Hotel.

Enjoy dinner at the hotel this evening.

Educational Focus: Croatia’s Seafaring History
Discover the significant role Croatia’s Adriatic coastline has played throughout centuries of nautical history due to its strategic location and abundant bays, inlets and coves.

Excursion: Exploring Split
Enjoy a walking tour of Split and delight in the city’s abundant historical riches. Visit the incredible living ruin of Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site that has been continuously inhabited since the Roman emperor abdicated his throne in A.D. 305. See the cellars, temple ruins, the elaborate Cathedral of St. Domnius and the Golden Gate. Also observe the Peristyle, a rectangular open court that was the heart of the palace. Roaming this complex’s tangle of passageways, courtyards and underground chambers is one of Croatia’s most enchanting experiences.

Local Flavor
Visit a local fish market and learn about the industry. Then sit down at a local restaurant to a freshly prepared lunch featuring the catch of the day.

Day 7


This morning, depart from the Split. Experience the turquoise waters of the Adriatic as you ferry to the island of Hvar. 

Excursion: Exploring Hvar
Upon arrival, set off to discover the great treasures lying within the 13th-century walls of Hvar’s Old Town, including richly ornamented Gothic palaces, picturesque squares and marble streets. During a guided walking tour, visit the Renaissance-era Cathedral of St. Stephen. Explore the Arsenal, where imposing war galleons were once repaired and refitted. Converted into a public theater in 1612, part of the Arsenal is still in use today. End the day at a Hvar Benedictine, a convent that dates from the mid 1600s, where nuns weave lace from agave leaves. 

Afterwards, check in to the Adriana Hvar Spa Hotel.

Learn about traditional Croatian wines and regional dishes which reflect the diverse cultures that have influenced the country over the course of its history. This lecture is given by the hotel’s sommelier and chef.

Enjoy a morning at leisure in Hvar.

Excursion: Hvar Wine Country
Admire the well-preserved Stari Grad Plain where 4th-century walls and stone shelters harmonize with grape and olive groves. Discover Croatia’s winemaking traditions which date back more than two millennia when Greek settlers planted the first vineyards along the Dalmation coast.

Cultural Event
Participate in a wine tasting at a local winery.

Local Flavor
Enjoy a Peka dinner at a country home. Peka is traditional cuisine featuring meat and vegetables roasted over hot coals under an iron bell.

Journey across the mountaintop road to the other side of Hvar and cruise back to Croatia’s mainland by ferry. Enjoy a scenic drive to Dubrovnik, where you will check in to the Grand Villa Argentina.

Excursion: Dubrovnik
This beautiful city was relentlessly shelled during Croatia’s Homeland War in the early 1990s, but the medieval churches, graceful fountains and squares have been restored to their former glory. Admire the 14th-century Franciscan Monastery’s Romanesque cloister, and visit its small apothecary, the oldest working pharmacy in Europe. Explore medieval Sponza Palace, which houses priceless ancient manuscripts, see the loggia and ornamentation of the Rector’s Palace and visit the baroque cathedral.
